One of the best ways to help ourselves to feel calmer when we are overwhelmed is to tune in with our physical senses.
In psychology we call this grounding and it’s a great way to self-soothe yourself and feel more present in the current moment, rather than thinking too much about what has happened in the past, or what might happen in the future.
For this exercise you can either use an ice cube, or cool running water.
All you are going to do is take the ice, or splash the water over your hands, around your wrists and up and down your forearms. You can even put some onto your face too if you want to.
Concentrate on how it feels in the moment and gently put your mind’s focus there, rather than worrying about what has been going around in your head.
